Dawkins Scores Late Winner over Cubs

TORRANCE, Calif. - Forward Amir Dawkins and Goalkeeper Luis Avelar provided the late game heroics for the El Camino College Warriors men's soccer team as they defeated LA City College 2-1 at home on Tuesday afternoon at Warrior Field to start South Coast Conference Play.

With the score tied 1-1 late in the game, the Cubs were awarded a penalty kick in the 86th minute. Avelar saved the ensuing penalty kick to preserve the 1-1 score. 

With time clicking down to the 90th minute, Juan Tibocha sent in a cross into the box from the right side.  Sean Anderson knocked the ball down and played a perfect pass to Amir Dawkins who curled it past the Cubs keeper to make it a 2-1 game. 

For much of the the game, LA City was the more aggressive side. They outshot the Warriors 14-to-7 for the game.

In the first half, the Cubs had more of the possession but it was the Warriors who scored the first goal of the game in the 38th minute.  Keima Minagawa started the play after getting the ball back on a defensive clearance. He sent a ball down the left side to Joshua Zendejas. Zendejas crossed the ball to Juan Tibocha who flick headed the ball to Juan Urrutia. Urrutia then crossed it back to Jaden Hancock who headed it past the Cubs goalkeeper.

The Warriors took a 1-0 lead into halftime. The Cubs came out of the halftime more agressive than the Warriors and scored in the 60th minute. Following a foul near the midline, the Cubs centerback sent a long ball into the Warriors box.  A Cubs player header it back to Joshua Rivera who blasted the ball into the lower left corner of the Warrior's goal to make it a 1-1 game. 

The game opened up more after the score was tied as both sides looked for a winner. The Warriors had multiple corner kicks and also hit the crossbar in the 72nd minute

The Cubs had their chance to take the lead in the 87th minute on their penalty kick but Luis Avelar made the biggest save of the game for the Warriors which paved the way for Amir Dawkins 90th minute game winner.  

After a five game homestand, the Warriors will now head on the road for four games. They head to Long Beach City College on Friday, October 10th. Kick-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
